Nachdem sich Joernie vor zwei Jahren der Not gehorchend auf Andreas Glasner festgelegt hatte, schien das Thema zunächst abgeräumt. Doch die Ansprüche stiegen, zumal Salzburg in dieser Saison für die CL qualifiziert war. Joernie sah im internationalen Maßstab in der Torwartposition einen Schwachpunkt, den er beheben wollte, nachdem seine Hoffnung, Angel Asencio würde zu einem Klassetorhüter reifen, noch nicht in Erfüllung gegangen war. Hinzu kam, dass die Austria mit insgesamt nur vier Torhütern ohnehin eher knapp ausgestattet war. Joernies Bemühungen um eine neue Nummer Eins waren auch rasch von Erfolg gekrönt. Borussia Dortmund, das in aktuellen Finanznöten schwebte, war bereit, Rüdiger Riegel (30/10) abzugeben. Riegel war in guter Form und brachte den Österreichern gleich einen Stärkepunkt mehr. Gleichwohl war der Deutsche, der vom TSV 1860 München stammte und nur für eine Saison in Dortmund spielte, international nur wenig erfahren. Erst achtmal war Riegel bei internationalen Spielen eingesetzt worden, mit 1860 war er sogar in die Zweite Liga abgestiegen und Dortmund war im vergangenen Jahr auch nur im Mittelfeld der Bundesliga zu finden. Die 12 Mio. €, die Riegel kostete, spiegelten diese noch nicht so berauschende Karriere durchaus wider, denn der Preis lag etwas unter dem Marktwert.
