Beim BMO spielt Wessels seit der Saison 13 beim FC Porto, zuvor war er beim FSV Mainz 05, beim VfL Wolfsburg und bei Inter Mailand unter Vertrag. Bei Porto war Wessels lange Zeit unangefochten die Nummer 1 im Tor. In der Saison 17 hatte er allerdings mit häufigen Verletzungen zu kämpfen, die sein Leistungsvermögen deutlich beeinträchtigten und am Ende sogar zu einer Abwertung auf Stärke 9 führten.
