Alle zwei Jahre finden während des Saisonübergangs im Wechsel mit den Weltmeisterschaften die Kontinentalmeisterschaften statt, in Europa u.a. die U21-Europmeisterschaft. Aus 32 Nationalmannschaften Europas wird dabei der Europameister ermittelt. Die jeweiligen Achtelfinalisten sind für die folgende Weltmeisterschaft qualifiziert.
