Transfers
Auf die Altersabwertungen von Jamie Day (33/9) und Hans-Dieter Bleyer (34/8) reagierte Joernie mit der Verpflichtung des 29-jährigen griechischen Abwehrspielers Vangelis Giasemakis. Giasemakis (10), bis dato dreimal für die griechische Nationalmannschaft eingesetzt, war von 1. FC Lok Leipzig gekommen. Mit Leipzig hatte Giasemakis eine Meisterschaft und einen Pokalsieg gefeiert und war dabei stets eine Stammkraft. 15,5 Mio. € überwies Joernie für den Wechsel an Hans-Bert Matoul, der mit diesem Geld seine Abwehr verjüngte (Gottlieb Theis - AB/27/10).

Sieben Jahre nach dem Pokaltriumph gegen den 1. FC Schweinfurt 05 nahm der SV Austria Salzburg erstmals wieder an der BMO Europa Leage teil. Seit dem EL-Sieg waren die Österreicher stets in der Champions Leage aktiv. Die Startberechtigung für die EL erhielten sie durch den Sieg des Alpen-Appennini-Pokals, über die Liga konnten sie sich nicht für einen internationalen Wettbewerb qualifizieren.

Mit einer Stärke von 116,5 war der SV Austria demzufolge ein klarer Favorit für den Aufstieg in das Achtelfinale. Mit dem vorjährigen Finalisten Lüneburg und dem vorjährigen Halbfinalisten Eindhoven gab es aber namhafte Konkurrenz. Und die Erfahrungen, die Salzburg im Vorjahr in der CL mit ZSKA Moskau gemacht hatte (1:2, 3:0) waren auch zwiespältig.

Seit der Saison 54 trainierte Aki Korrell (49/5) den violetten Nachwuchs. Auch sein Vertrag war erneut verlängert worden, als absehbar war, dass er mit seinem Team wieder das Saisonziel erreichen würde, was dann auch der Fall war.
