Marc Overmars ist ein niederländischer Mittelfeldspieler der Stärke 10. Sein reales Vorbild spielte zuletzt beim FC Barcelona, musste 2004 jedoch aus gesundheitlichen Gründe seine Karriere beenden.
Für die holländische Nationalmannschaft hat er bislang 28 Spiele absolviert und dabei 6 Tore erzielt. Bei der WM Saison 17 wurde er mit den Niederlanden Weltmeister.
Overmars internationale Karriere begann in Deutschland und führte ihn über Spanien nach England. Bei Leeds United wurde Overmars zum Top-Spieler der Stärke 10.
In der Saison 10 wechselte er dann zum FC Porto. Dort konnte er jedoch nicht an sein früheres Leistungsvermögen anschließen. Nach zwei Jahren ging er deshalb erneut in die deutsche Bundesliga, zum damaligen Meister FSV Mainz 05 (Saison 13).
Doch auch in Mainz hielt es ihn nicht lange. Schon zur Saison 14 wechselte er ein weiteres Mal, diesmal zurück nach Spanien zu Espanyol Barcelona. Dort war dann wieder der Marc Overmars zu sehen, wie man ihn von England kannte. Doch seine Lust an immer wieder Neuem wurde immer stärker. Bereits zum Beginn der Saison 15 unterschrieb er einen Vertrag beim Lokalrivalen FC Barcelona. Ein Jahr später kam dann schon der nächste Wechsel: zurück nach England zum FC Liverpool.
In England fühlte sich Overmars sofort wieder sehr wohl und anvancierte zum Leistungsträger bei den Reds. Vor allem in der Saison 17 lief es prächtig für Overmars. Das hinderte ihn allerdings nicht, eine Saison später schon wieder weiter zu ziehen. Als 33-jähriger heuerte er in Saison 18 beim österreichischen Klub SV Wörgl an. Dort war ein Spieler seines Kalibers natürlich noch einmal der absolute Star des Teams.
Marc Overmars ist wohl ein typischer Vertreter der sog. Legionäre, also Spielern, die ohne große emotinale Bindung an den Verein, in dem sie spielen, immer wieder neue Arbeitgeber suchen, die ihnen bessere Konditionen oder Aussichten versprechen.
