Die WM der Saison 43 wurde zum ersten Mal in Costa Rica ausgerichtet. Damit wurde die WM zum ersten Mal in Mittelamerika ausgetragen. Titelverteidiger war das Team aus Frankreich.

Gespielt wurde in acht Vierergruppen. Jedes Team bekam 6 Tore auf das Torkonto, eine Teilung in Heim- und Auswärtstorkonto gab es nicht. Die jeweils Erst- und Zweitplatzierten zogen ins Achtelfinale ein. Die Erstplatzierten bekamen hierbei 4 Tore auf ihr Torkonto gutgeschrieben, die Zweitplatzierten 3 Tore. Im Achtelfinale waren folgende Spielpaarungen vorgegeben: 1-1 gegen 2-2, 1-2 gegen 2-1, 3-1 gegen 4-2, 3-2 gegen 4-1, 5-1 gegen 6-2, 5-2 gegen 6-1, 7-1 gegen 8-2, 7-2 gegen 8-1. Für das Viertelfinale waren folgende Spielpaarungen vorgegeben: Sieger AF1 gegen Sieger AF3, Sieger AF2 gegen Sieger AF4, Sieger AF5 gegen Sieger AF7, Sieger AF6 gegen Sieger AF8. Das Überstehen des Viertelfinales brachte erneut eine Gutschrift von 3 Toren auf die Torkonten der verbleibenden Teilnehmer. Für das Halbfinale waren folgende Spielpaarungen vorgegeben: Sieger VF1 gegen Sieger VF3, Sieger VF2 gegen Sieger VF4. Das Finale bestritten die beiden Sieger des Halbfinales, die Verlierer trugen das Spiel um den 3. Platz aus.

Dann macht das kleine zentralamerikanische land costa rica mal den anfang, für die A-WM natürlich.

Costa rica heißt übersetzt "reiche küste". Allerdings ist nicht nur die küste im wahrsten sinne des wortes reich an schönheit, sondern auch der rest des landes imponiert mit seiner beeindruckenden vielfalt an landschaften und tierarten.

Hinzu kommt, dass das land bereits seit über 60 jahren OHNE armee ist. Dies soll auch bei dem größten fußball event des BMO zum tragen kommen, denn es soll eine WM der freude und begeisterung ohne jegliche form der gewalt sein. Frei nach dem costa ricanischen slogan:
